Verlag Barbara Budrich is committed to sustainability in all aspects of its operations. Our dedication to sustainability encompasses three key areas, each listed below:

Moreover, our publishing programme is filled with a variety of publications that contribute to the advancement of sustainability, aligning closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG17). In particular, Goals 4: Quality Education, 5: Gender Equality, and 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions are central to our publications.
Sustainability is ingrained within our team’s culture, both at the level of executive management – represented by Barbara Budrich – and through dedicated team members. Two of our team members serve as sustainability officers, passionately driving our sustainability initiatives forward.
Verlag Barbara Budrich acts socially – inwardly, towards its own team and interactions with partners, and outwardly, towards engagement in our local community. This includes supporting social projects, providing fair and gender-equitable salaries and benefits for our employees, and environmentally friendly travel (all our trips are offset through atmosfair). Additionally, we encourage sustainable practices among our partners and select them based on sustainable criteria – from our server host to our holiday gifts.
In 2023/2024, we are proud to announce the release of our inaugural sustainability report, showcasing our commitment to transparency and accountability in all aspects of our operations.
Ecological book and journal production (Europe)
- Since 1 November 2023, we have been offsetting the carbon emissions for our entire print production. This compensation is partly carried out directly through our partners in the printing industry, and partly we offset the production ourselves through our partner, atmosfair.
- Increasingly, we are able to utilize FSC-certified materials for printing. Some of our production partners offer FSC-certified production or even Cradle-to-Cradle production. If you’re interested in budrich green print, please get in touch.
- All our printing facilities have ceased using plastic film for wrapping our books and journals. (It’s possible that individual older copies may still be wrapped.)
Shipping of printed books and journals
- Climate-neutral shipping within Germany.
- All cardboard boxes, packing material, paper, and air cushion bags are made from nearly 100% recycled materials and 100% recyclable.
