For 20 years, your publishing partner for the social sciences: In 2024, Verlag Barbara Budrich celebrates its 20th year anniversary! Here, we will share stories about what has shaped and moved the publishing house in early and in later years, featuring contributions from our partners and celebrating with you here on our blog and across our social media channels. In this post, Toake Endoh is to share about our collaboration.

Dear Toake Endoh, could you please introduce yourself briefly to our readers?

I am a researcher and a graduate school professor in international politics based in Japan and the US. My research focus is on international migration, deportation, and the role of politics in Japan, the UK, and the US.

How long have you known Barbara Budrich Publishers? How did the first contact come about?

I had a very fortunate encounter with Barbara Budrich at an international conference in Brisbane, Australia, in 2018. A short conversation at her company booth developed into a book publishing project on Japan’s immigration and integration policies, thanks to Barbara’s professional foresight that my research questions could be explored in a co-authored book.

Is there anything you particularly remember about working with us?

A book publication is a laborious, bumpy journey. At every stage of the book publication, I, as a rookie editor, struggled with many difficulties, both technical and fundamental, contingencies (the Covid-19 pandemic above all), and duress. At every “crisis” moment, the VBB staff supplied me with professional, pragmatic, and compassionate support so that our small boat would weather the storm, stay on course, and reach the destination (i.e., book launch) on time. It is not too much to say that our book project would not be completed without your support.

How would you summarize the collaboration with us in one sentence?

Verlag Barbara Budrich is an effective and trustworthy incubator to develop a budding intellectual idea into a high-quality academic book.
