Your publications for eternity: long-term archiving at Verlag Barbara Budrich

Hands wrapping books in paper.

Will my book still be digitally accessible in 30 years? What possibilities are there to preserve my work permanently?

The most durable medium is still paper. But digital preservation of content is also becoming increasingly important. To preserve your books digitally in the long term, we work with the non-profit long-term archive Portico digital preservation service. Most of our publications are preserved through long-term archiving.

Portico is a community-supported preservation archive that safeguards access to e-journals, e-books, and digital collections. The Portico process ensures that the content will remain accessible and usable for researchers, scholars, and students in the future.

Data preservation with Portico is based on four principles:

1) Usability.

The content of an article or book remains available even if the technologies that represent it change. Portico monitors these technologies, which are constantly changing, and ensures that the content remains permanently usable.

2) Authenticity

The content is an authentic reflection of the original and its origin is verifiable. When Portico transforms content, the original file and all associated information is preserved.

3) Discoverability

Content is given full bibliographic metadata so that it remains permanently discoverable.

4) Accessibility

Designated content is available for use in the Portico online archive by all students, staff and lecturers of the participating institutions.
